Do I need a fence permit?
Fences and other construction projects are usually handled by your local municipality. Residents of unincorporated areas may need permits for some projects. Your local government may or may not require you to obtain a permit, and the process and requirements may vary. In the Atlanta Metro Area, the City of Atlanta, the City of Sandy Springs, the City of Milton, the City of Johns Creek, and the City of Brookhaven all have permit requirements for building fences.
What are the limitations on how I can build my fence?
On the state level, Georgia does not have any uniform fence laws. A fence’s regulation is determined by the county and the municipality. As a result, there are a lot of questions about fence installation since the exact rules differ from place to place. In spite of this, many of the rules are similar.
Generally, fence heights are limited. In most cases, you can build a fence up to six feet high at the back of your property. A fence can be built as high as eight feet in some cases. For example, a lattice or other transparent section may be allowed. Other instances may allow you to build up to eight feet if you can demonstrate a reasonable need. The exact rules vary from municipality to municipality.
Fences in your front yard are also typically limited in height by most cities, and they are usually shorter than those in your backyard. There may also be a need to set back a front yard fence from the public right of way by a few feet. Generally, on corner lots, you can’t block a driver’s view around the corner due to safety regulations.
In most jurisdictions, a fence’s finished side must face outward. Your neighbor may need to approve your building plan if you plan on building along the property line. You are better off building your fence a few feet inside your property line if you don’t want to contend with your neighbor.
Is it necessary to know where my property line is?
The homeowner is responsible for determining where the fence will be installed. The plat map or other surveyor’s drawing of your property is recommended if you are installing a fence close to your property line. The best way to determine your property line if you don’t have this information is to hire a surveyor. You can tell us where to build the fence, but if you provide us with your property map, we can help you determine the limits of where you can build.
When it comes to power, sewage, and gas lines, do I need to know where they are buried?
The first thing you need to do before digging is locate buried utilities. These details are usually readily available from utility companies. It will be necessary to obtain that information before we begin digging for posts.
Is there an option that doesn’t require maintenance?
In terms of fence installation, this is one of the most common questions. It is common for homeowners to be concerned about the ongoing maintenance of their fences. Fortunately, most fences don’t require much maintenance. It is important to restrain wood fences every year or two, and rust should be inspected on steel fences. However, if you’re looking for a totally maintenance-free solution, we recommend chain link, vinyl, or aluminum. The maintenance of chain link fences is minimal. If your vinyl fence gets dirty, you can clean it with a hose, but it doesn’t require any maintenance. Aluminum fences are corrosion-free and can last for years without any maintenance.
Is there a color option for chain link fences?
In fact, yes. When it comes to strong, maintenance-free fences, chain link is an excellent option. There are, however, many homeowners who dislike the industrial look of chain link fences. Thankfully, the chain link is now available in several colors with a vinyl coating. The most popular color is black. It blends in nicely and is simple and elegant.
Is it necessary to talk to my neighbor?
At the very least, if you will be building your fence in an area where your neighbor can see it, you should let them know what you are planning. The construction will take a couple of days, and then they will be able to see your fence for a long time. It may be necessary to get the neighbor’s permission if the fence will be along the property line between you and your neighbor. Fences along property lines can also be shared between you and your neighbor in many cases. Be sure to ask your neighbor if they have any questions about fence installation.
